In our class this past Wednesday, Brenda shared this passage & we talked a bit about the mighty oak tree. Later I sent this photo to Brenda since it came to mind in our discussion. Doesn't this give a great visual to the passage? Definitely this tree could "display His splendor." Tim & I went on a hunt to find this "Angel Oak" sprawling out on one of the lowland islands along Charleston, SC. (The photo is small but if you look really close, Tim is standing in the middle of the base of the tree.)
Isaiah 61:1-3
The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me,
because the LORD has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners,
to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor
and the day of vengeance of our God,
to comfort all who mourn,
and provide for those who grieve in Zion—
to bestow on them a crown of beauty
instead of ashes,
the oil of joy
instead of mourning,
and a garment of praise
instead of a spirit of despair.
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
a planting of the LORD
for the display of his splendor.

Oh my goodness, DEBBIE - How wonderful! - This old oak inspires such thoughts about where the righteousness of Christ reaches: everywhere at one time, to the lowest of low and the highest of high. And God is nurturing us to be like that tree for His glory! So cool. Thank you so much for your thoughtful sharing. Now, if only Tim had worn the bright orange and hot pink shirt with the bright orange, hot pink and kelly green shorts that matched... THEN, we coulda seen him much more easily. Hee Hee
Once again, because of this study and Edward T Welch's book, "Addictions, A Banquet in the Grave" that Beth mentioned in the last video session - I am struck by the need for accountability. I've wanted to get this notion going in my own life for a number of years, but for some lousy excuses masquerading as reasons, I've not hit the gas pedal. Actually, I did just contact someone who's agreed to meet with me and so I'm praying it'll be a win/win blessing for both of us. I just have this feeling that the lessons I'm attempting to learn will stick better, cultivate more fruit, as well as keep me honest/ help keep my insidious pride pruned back with someone OTHER THAN THE PASTOR to talk over God's work and His will.
What are you all doing that's working... or not?
Bless your heart, Miss Sarah. I love your writing--even more I love your transparency. We aren't in the same class, but it is a delight to have you along for the journey. May the Lord bless you for pursuing accountability. Gulp...not easy but nearly always productive. Hugs~(Oh & I found out if you click on the tree photo it enlarges so you can see itty bitty Tim a little better-even without the neon colored clothing!)
